Project Summary:

The Textiles Committee’s “Sustainability in the Textile Value Chain” project, launched in October 2024, is a pioneering initiative to advance circularity within the textile industry in Navi Mumbai. This project was inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the CIDCO Convention Centre in Vashi. It focuses on promoting sustainable practices by enabling the collection, sorting, and recycling of post-consumer textiles (PCT) through the creation of a dedicated Textiles Recovery Facility (TRF) in Belapur, Navi Mumbai. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Textiles, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, SBI Foundation, Tisser India, and IDH India.

Key Activities:

  • Textiles Recovery Facility (TRF): Establishing a 3000 sq. ft. recovery center in Belapur to handle post-consumer textile waste, acting as a central hub for recycling and upcycling activities.
  • Partnerships with Self-Help Groups (SHGs): Involving 80 SHGs to actively participate in textile waste management, providing hands-on training in sorting, recycling, and repurposing textile waste.
  • Resource Conservation: Implementing processes to divert textile waste from landfills and waterways, promoting environmental conservation.

Impact:

  • Environmental Benefits: Reduces pollution by diverting textile waste from landfills and waterways, conserving valuable resources, and promoting sustainable disposal methods.
  • Economic Empowerment: Creates approximately 500 jobs in the NMMC area through SHG involvement, offering local communities meaningful livelihood opportunities.
  • Community Support: By fostering partnerships with local organizations, the project enhances community engagement and strengthens collaborative approaches to sustainability.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Job Creation: Employment opportunities for local communities, especially through SHG involvement in textile recycling.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Minimization of textile waste in landfills and waterways, contributing to cleaner ecosystems.
  • Economic and Social Empowerment: Enhanced income opportunities for SHGs, fostering community development and social cohesion.
  • Scalability: As the first of its kind in India, the project aims to serve as a model for similar initiatives nationwide, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices within the textile industry.
