Mumbai, India (October 19, 2024): In a significant step towards a greener textile industry, the Textiles Committee launched a pilot project on “Sustainability in the Textile Value Chain” at the CIDCO Convention Centre, Vashi. The project, inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, aims to promote circularity in the textile industry by facilitating the collection, sorting, and recycling of post-consumer textiles in Navi Mumbai.
A key component of the project is the establishment of a Textiles Recovery Facility (TRF) in Belapur, Navi Mumbai. Spanning over 3000 sq. ft., the TRF will serve as a central hub for handling textile waste. The facility is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Textiles, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, SBI Foundation, Tisser India, and IDH India.
The project is expected to have a significant impact on both the environment and the local economy. By diverting post-consumer textiles (PCT) from landfills and waterways, the initiative aims to reduce environmental pollution and conserve resources. Additionally, the project’s involvement with 80 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) is expected to create around 500 jobs in the NMMC area, providing livelihood opportunities for local communities.
This pioneering initiative is a first-of-its-kind in India and is expected to serve as a model for similar projects across the country. By demonstrating the potential of upcycling and recycling textile waste, the project highlights the importance of sustainable practices in the textile industry.
